Brian Laxton has successfully represented people in Michigan who needed sound expertise in the areas of criminal and civil law. Brian is widely recognized as a leading practitioner in representing state bar applicants in Character and Fitness issues seeking admission to the Michigan State Bar. Brian has represented bar applicants in a wide variety of issues at the District and Standing Committee levels as well as before the Board of Law Examiners. Brian has lectured extensively to law students regarding the Character and Fitness Process. He has been a regular visiting professor at The Thomas M. Cooley Law School teaching Professional Responsibility.
Brian is also widely respected as a Criminal Defense attorney and has represented hundreds of people facing the criminal justice system. He gained extensive criminal experience while prosecuting criminal offenses for one of the largest municipalities in the Lansing area. In addition to his extensive trial work, Brian has represented many clients in both State and Federal criminal appeals.
Brian has extensive experience representing clients in licensing matters related to the various licensing boards and disciplinary subcommittees with the State of Michigan including professional and medical licensing as well as child care licensing issues with BCAL.
Brian also represents attorneys in attorney discipline cases - in both the investigation stage with the Attorney Grievance Commission and after a formal complaint has been filed with the Attorney Discipline Board.
Brian is continually named one of the Best Lawyers in America in Best Lawyers magazine for several years in the area of Drunk Driving defense. More importantly, his clients appreciate his willingness to go above and beyond to give them honest and knowledgeable advice as well as aggressive and strong representation. Brian also volunteers his time as a Board Member of Michigan CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for children) and as a member of the East Lansing Zoning Board of Appeals. In addition, he enjoys coaching youth baseball and soccer.
He is a cum laude graduate of The Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Prior to attending law school he worked for the Michigan House of Representatives. While in law school, Mr. Laxton clerked for the well-respected East Lansing firm of Oade, Stroud and Kleiman, P.C. After graduation, Mr. Laxton served as a law clerk/research attorney for the Chief Judge of the 56th Circuit Court. In addition, prior to forming his own law firm, Mr. Laxton was a partner and a member of the Board of Directors at The Reynolds Law Firm, P.C and a founding member with Mertens, Laxton and Clement, PLLC.
Mr. Laxton is admitted to practice in both the Western and Eastern Federal Districts as well as the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
He lives in East Lansing with his wife and four children.
